Kolkata and rain have a long history together. There’s a world of difference, though, between sipping cha while the rain falls outside and trying to move an entire flat in the middle of it. Waterlogged roads, soggy cartons, that damp smell that seeps into everything - a monsoon move can go sideways in plenty of small ways.
It doesn’t have to. You just need to approach it a bit differently. Here’s how.
First, Accept That Monsoon Moving Is a Different Game
Between June and September, Kolkata sees heavy rain almost every year. Low areas in Behala, Tollygunge, parts of Salt Lake and New Town, plus many places near the EM Bypass, can see waterlogging quickly. Your own street might stay dry, but the road leading out often doesn’t. Just the humidity can spoil wooden furniture and electronics if packing isn’t done properly. This is not a normal move, so plan for it with extra care.
Pick Your Day Like It Actually Matters
Look at the weather forecast for the whole week, not just the day you’ve chosen. If there’s a red alert, don’t take the risk - push the date. Morning slots can sometimes be easier to manage, but check the forecast before fixing the timing. Keep one or two backup dates ready.
One more thing: lots of other people are trying to move around the same time. Book your movers early or you’ll end up with whoever’s still available.
Sort Out Society Rules Before the Truck Shows Up
This one catches people by surprise. Many housing societies in Kolkata have their own rules about lift use, parking, gate entry, and the hours you’re allowed to move. Check all of it in advance. If you’re leaving a complex in Salt Lake or Rajarhat, ask about service-lift timings and whether any deposit is required.
Wet lobby floors are another problem. Put down old mats or cardboard near the entrance so no one slips while carrying the fridge.
Packing: This Is Where You Win or Lose
Cheap packing is a disaster waiting to happen in the monsoon. Use waterproof shrink wrap, bubble wrap, foam sheets, and double-walled cartons. Tape every seam properly. Drop silica gel packets into boxes with electronics, clothes, and papers - they actually help.
Wooden furniture needs a layer of plastic film before the bubble wrap goes on. And don’t pack anything that’s still damp. Not curtains, not bedsheets, not the towel you used that morning. Dry it first.
Electronics and Documents Need Special Treatment
Wrap every electronic item in plastic, then cushion it well. Use the original boxes if you still have them. Take the batteries out of remotes. Put silica gel inside the box.
For documents - passports, property papers, insurance, bank stuff - get a waterproof pouch and a hard folder. Carry it yourself rather than putting it in the moving truck.
Clear the Clutter Before You Clear the Door
Moving gives you a good reason to clear out things you haven’t used in the last two years. Sell whatever you can, give away the rest, and throw the junk. With less stuff, there is less packing, less loading, less risk of damage, and a lower bill. Also turn off the gas connection, water supply and appliances before the movers reach.
Take photos of your expensive items before packing. If something goes wrong later, those pictures are your proof.
Plan Your Route Like a Local
A 30-minute drive in Kolkata can easily turn into two hours when it’s raining. Check live traffic and local flooding updates on the day. Avoid underpasses and known trouble spots. If your lane is narrow or the building sits inside a gully, tell the moving team in advance so they bring the right vehicle.
Always have a backup route ready. It feels fussy until the day you actually need it.
Loading Day: Keep Everything Off the Ground
Before you put anything in the truck, cover the floor with tarpaulin. Use wooden pallets or raised platforms so the boxes don’t sit right on the floor. Putting anti-slip mats on the ramp looks like a small step, but it stops bigger accidents. Also, don’t leave the cartons on wet ground while waiting to load them.
If the rain gets heavy mid-load, stop. Waiting twenty minutes is better than ruining the furniture.
Furniture, Books, and the Damp Problem
Wood and water don’t go well together. First cover the furniture with plastic, then add bubble wrap. Mattresses and sofas need complete waterproof covers - a simple sheet on top is not enough.
Books weigh more than most people think and they pull in moisture like sponges. Put them in small boxes so no one strains their back, and line the inside of the carton with plastic.
Moving a car or bike as well? Choose covered transport. Take photos before handover and sort out the insurance.
Don’t Skip Transit Insurance
It costs extra and no one likes paying for it. During the monsoon, though, it’s genuinely worth it. Make an inventory with photos and rough values. Keep the bills for expensive items. If damage happens, report it right away and note it on the delivery receipt.
Pack a Bag You’d Take to a Hotel
Raincoats, umbrellas, towels, a change of clothes, medicines, water, snacks, chargers, power banks, and all your documents. Add whatever the kids or pets need. This bag travels with you in the car - not in the truck. You’ll be glad you did when the truck shows up hours later than planned.
On the Day Itself
Start early. Keep your phone charged. Supervise the loading but let the professionals do the heavy lifting. Confirm the inventory and the delivery address before the truck leaves. Keep kids and pets out of the way.
Once You’re In
Let the place air out before you unpack everything. Check cupboards and walls for dampness. Wipe down the furniture. Give electronics time to adjust to room temperature before switching them on. Dry anything that feels even slightly moist.
Wrapping Up
